Former Kailua-Kona resident and blogger Gwen Van Velsor has released a new book “Follow That Arrow: Notes on Getting Here from There.”
Van Velsor, award-winning author of the blog www.GourmetGwen.com, left the islands in 2014 to start a new life. Now you can read all about her adventures, including her pilgrimage along the famed Camino de Santiago in Spain in the new 162-page book.
The story begins on the Big Island and throughout the text it’s clear how much the author was influenced by the island lifestyle and Hawaiian culture. A native of Portland, Oregon, Van Velsor moved to Hawaii in 2006. While in Hawaii, she worked as a teacher at Konawaena Middle School, earning a degree in special education at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Van Velsor has been writing for www.GourmetGwen.com since 2009 and while she loves cooking, she loves writing about food and life even more.
As a nod to her food blogging roots, recipes accompany many of the book’s chapters, which chronicle her international food experiences along the journey.
“The book is a reflection on love, faith and the food that got me from Hawaii to the edges of Spain. Leaving Hawaii was one of the most difficult decisions of my life,” said Van Velsor, who currently resides in Maryland.
